The Law of Portugal is the legal system that applies to Portugal. It is part of the family
of the civil law legal systems, based on Roman law. As such, it has many common features
with the legal systems found in most of the countries in Continental Europe.
The main Portuguese laws include the Constitution (1976, as amended), the Civil Code (1966, as amended), the Penal Code (1982, as amended), the Labour Code (2003, as amended) and the Commercial Societies Code (1986, as amended). The Commercial Code (1888, as amended) and the Administrative Code (1945, as amended). The Administrative Code used to have a high importance in the past, but is now largely obsolete and partially replaced by new legislation.
